EQUILIBRIUM

ARTIST: Julia Poulton
CURATOR: Court Spencer
DATE: Mar - May 2025
VENUE: Eye Room, Leeds

Equilibrium presents new paintings by Yorkshire-based artist Julia Poulton, whose practice explores the emotional and sensory qualities of abstraction. Her work is characterised by fluid mark making, subtle texture and an evolving palette that conveys mood, atmosphere and a sense of quiet reflection. Through an intuitive and spontaneous process, Julia translates shifting inner states into ethereal compositions that hover between energy and stillness.

Drawing inspiration from the natural world and the act of painting itself, Julia approaches her canvases as spaces for exploration rather than predetermined outcomes. She layers paint in gestural movements, embracing unpredictability and experimentation to capture both the immediacy of feeling and the passage of time. Each painting is an expression of presence, an emotional response to the moment of creation.

For Julia, painting is both a meditative and restorative act. The process offers balance and clarity, allowing her to reconnect with a sense of flow that she describes as central to her practice. In this way, Equilibrium reflects the artist’s search for harmony, between chaos and calm, control and release, the seen and the felt.

Presented by The Art Court at Eye Room, the exhibition invites viewers to pause and immerse themselves in the interplay of light, texture and emotion that defines Julia’s work. The paintings act as quiet meditations on equilibrium itself, revealing how abstraction can mirror the subtle rhythms of thought and nature, and how stillness can emerge through movement.
